Cable braiding is a manufacturing process in which multiple strands of material are interwoven over a cable or wire bundle to create a protective sleeve. The braid is applied directly over the assembly using a braiding machine, which weaves strands in opposing directions to create a tight, flexible and durable covering.
Braiding is applied directly onto the harness, which means it conforms to the shape of the assembly including branches and junctions. Unlike split loom or heat-shrink tubing, braided protection allows the harness to breathe, remains flexible at low temperatures and does not trap moisture. Braiding also adds tensile strength and, when metallic strands are used, it can provide additional protection from rodents and also EMI shielding.
Outsourcing braiding makes commercial sense when internal machine capacity is a production bottleneck, when demand is seasonal or project-driven, when a large contract requires faster turnaround than internal capacity allows, or when the business wants to avoid capital expenditure on additional machinery. It is also useful as a redundancy measure if internal equipment fails or is taken offline for maintenance.
Cable braiding is used across mining, construction, transport, emergency services and industrial manufacturing. Any application where cables or wire harnesses are exposed to abrasion, vibration, mechanical damage, fluid ingress or temperature extremes is a candidate for braided protection.
